49a Legendary monster. Do we prefer Griffin or Griffon? Any views?

PS My family have started calling any dilemma "a Katie".

Distinct preference for GRIFFIN, remembered from schooldays, hope it helps?
Both Chambers and Britannica give griffin as first preference but that proves nothing.
Well I've gone with Griffin.
On Google

Griffin - 51.700,000 hits
Griffon - 3,780,000 hits

If that helps.
Just looked in my Dictionary of Classical Mythology. That gives Griffin and Gryphon. The latter, of course, doesn't come into the equation.
It does not matter, Aquagility. Either will be accepted. Where there is more than one recognised spelling for an answer, each will be accepted - this has been confirmed by the Telegraph's Crossword Editor, Kate Fassett.
I too prefer Griffin.

Now, at the risk of sounding completely thick, why is a dilemma a Katie?

Fairly sure I've missed something big!

Thank you all. I will bow to Jools' arithmetic and go for griffin.

JD, it's because Kate almost always manages to slip one in - and there's never a cross clue to give a firm answer. she's her father's daughter, that one.

Thanks Aquagility,

I'm now a little wiser (I think!). Kate sets the crossword? And did her father before her?

JD
Quite correct JD .. this relates to the Saturday Telegraph GK crossword, which for many years was set by Michael Mepham until his untimely death a few months ago.

His daughter Kate Mepham has since admirably taken over the reins to continue providing this interesting and challenging puzzle!

Welcome back, sarumite. Did you confess? Or did they just accept your back-hander?
Many thanks Sarumite for the explanation!

I'd almost worked it out for myself.......somewhat like a quiz question! LOL

I'm a little bit wiser tonight and what an interesting fact I've learned.

Thanks all,

JD
Hi Aqua .. I guess the lady editor has just succumbed to my natural charm!!?? hee hee!! ☺☺
