Griffin or Griffon?

both spellings given in Chambers .... but KM doesnt use Chambers!!

Griffon is the more usual I think
Coincidentally, Q2 in the Pub Quiz refers to the Griffin Brewery.
Oh dear, I put griffin as it was the first named in the dictionary!!

Having looked in depth in Wikepedia it seems that Griffin is preferred!
Time for the diagonal line accross the square?
I do not understand why the concern over alternative spellings - if there is more than one way of spelling a word, each spelling will be accepted.
