Thank you. I found this word but the definition did not seem right as it did not mention anything in my question.
Chamber's gives as a second meaning, operant, ..(psychol.) behaviour that is spontaneous as opposed to being a response to stimulus. Hope this helps.

Yes I have found that definition now in Chambers 10th edition. My friends were using an earlier Chambers and it wasn't in that. It also wasn't in the on line "OneLook Dictionary which is usually pretty good.
So double thanks.
