Tyhe old standard "By the light of the silvery moon" done by Little Richard
Having nominated Midge Ure's cover of Tom Rush's No Regrets as one of the worst covers ever, I'll nominate The Walker Brothers' version as one of the best.

Jeff Buckley's version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah must be right up there and, for sheer comedy value, The Gourds' hillbilly rendition of Snoop Dogg's Gin And Juice.
Great choice there with Johnny Cash. There are so many good'uns.

My faves though

The White Stripes ~ I just dont know what to do with myself

Starsailor ~ Jealous guy

Muse ~ Feeling Good and The House of the Rising Sun

Something in the Air ~ Elbow

I cant make decisions by the way but if I was offered money to make a choice today I would pick Whiskey in the Jar ~ Metallica
Soft Cell - Tainted Love.

Does exactly what a good cover should. Completely re-invented the original, and in this case created one of the most memorable musical hooks ever.
My earlier post seems to have disappeared so i am sending it again.

Equal first - Walker Bros 'No Regrets' and Richie Havens 'Fire and Rain' (the orignal by James Taylor gets a lot of plays on radio but Havens' version gives me a tingle the original does not). Try listening also to his version of 'Here Comes The Sun'.
I agree with the Johnny Cash and Muse (Feeling Good) posts...here's some others...

We Are Scientists - Hoppipolla

Razorlight - Hey Ya

Hayseed Dixie - Paradise City & Walk This Way

Mark Ronson - God Put A Smile Upon Your Face & Toxic

Johnny Cash - One

Manic Street Preachers - Suicide Is Painless
I'm a big fan of Johnny Cash but didnt like his covers of 'One' or 'Hurt' His voice was shot to bits by then.

I do like Mary J Blige's rendition (well more of a duet) of U2's 'One' Also Skinny Puppy - Tainted Love adds a different twist and Revolting ***** cover of Rod Stewarts 'If you think I'm sexy' is worth a listen.
Wuthering Heights by China Drum
Ramones - What a wonderful world - sounds great in the car...
I'll most probably get slagged off for these but

Smells Like Teen Spirit by Tori Amos
Can't Help Falling In Love - U2
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - Neil Finn
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Honeyroot
IMO the Cash version was better than NIN. Alkaline Trio have done brilliant covers of Metro by Berlin, wait for the blackout by the damned and Rooftops by HWM.
OMFG.... Priesty I have never met or seen anyone else who has ever heard it, its brilliant!
I accigoogally came across this just the other day.
It's a Telegrapgh top 50 cover versions from 2004.

Some predictable ones - (Hendrix's All Along The watchtower at no. 1) - but interesting diversion nonetheless.
I reckon marilyn manson did a top rendition of sweet dreams (eurythmics)...not everyones taste i'm sure, but he definitely put his individual mark on it!

Def agree with Cash's Hurt.
How about Stranglers,Walk on By;Jeff Buckley,Lilac Wine and This Mortal Coil's version of Song To The Siren
