There were 20 shillings in one pound, so the equivalent number of new pence would be FIVE.

thanks both very much I thought that was the answer but it seemed too easy
Beware the trick question,I once had this in a quiz,I answered the same as gen2 and sarumite only to be told I was wrong,and that there were 12 old pence in a shilling,devious I thought.
