Tel GK/Herculis Links Game : December Week 1

Yes it's the beginning of another month, and time to launch the Herculis Link Game for the month of December.
As all of you regulars are aware, ShamrockBlue is unable to continue in his administrative role owing to other commitments, so I have been asked to launch the thread to ensure that our not so little weekly diversion continues unabated!
For any newcomers to the game, (and all are most welcome), the object is to predict Monday's Herculis Linkwords in the Daily Telegraph, with the shaded solutions from Saturday's crossword.
Crofter will then award points for each correct guess this weekend, and also for the next four weekends, to determine the overall champion for the month. Let's hope that the beads on his abacus are well greased and in good working order!

To this point in time I have logged 59 entries of which 50 are regulars. This leaves 9 newcomers - Welcome. All except one (cordero) are recorded in this posting (above).
I expect another 30 entries over this the second day. If any one meets up with cordero, please gently remind him/her that it helps if we are all logged into the same posting!

The time has come to take stock! By now you know the DRILL.The TRAFFIC to the posting has been steady but the final volume is slightly down. Did "rogue" sites have any BEARING? I think not, but they have to be kicked into ORBIT!
The variety of guesses was truly amazing with between 20 and 24 individual guesses for ever component link. Some were clever - with trafficKING and orbitALLY coming to mind. Some bordered on the lunatic with UP and GEOSTATIONARY being either too short or too long. Remember these guesses have to appear in a regular Crossword tomorrow morning.
Under TRAFFIC there were four close favourites with Light(s), Warden, Jam and Cone all fancied. Not so, under ORBIT where LUNAR emerged as the clear favourite (by all the lunatics)!
Again in the BEARING section the very clear favourite was BALL with a handful of "also rans" trailing far behind. Under DRILL, again the field was wide open with honours being shared by Sergeant and Seed closely followed by Bit, Hall and Square. BUT what will be the chosen links tomorrow?
Newcmer Dustybun was told "It's easy!". What we forgot to tell him was that entering is easy but getting all four hits is bl**dy difficult! No-one has yet achieved it! Mention also for Seekeerz (aka Steff) who sends her entires from the southern parts of Australia (even further than O-ice from the UK). A warm welcome to all the newcomers to the crazy world of Herculis.
Winners and scores should be declared on this posting tomorrow about 10.30am. These will serve as the base of a 4-week campaign.

this competition is surely for fun? also one tries hard to offer different answers from the others and to be entertaining. any word/s up to fifteen letters will fit - saturday's cryptic had one, "tower of strength" - so i am torn between annoyance at being refered to as "lunatic" and pride at having achieved a "mention in despatches"! most importantly, grateful thanks to those who take the trouble to co-ordinate this contest and admiration for their efforts..
What's a JOURNAL BEARING I hear you ask!?
Well it's an engineering term for a bearing that supports part of a shaft or axle - and that's this week's "punch below the belt"!
The other words were less of a shock with ISLAND, LUNAR and PACK. An in-depth study of wordlength shows that all previous Link Words contain between 4 and 7 letters! (Why am I telling you this piece of important information!?). We were able to predict these and there are bonus points going to the first entrant to pick up on any link.
LUNAR was the first to go - thanks to crofter as entrant number 10. Usually all the link words are spotted by this point, but we had to wait to entrant number 22 when the eagle-eyed yelsel chanced his arm with ISLAND.
The third word PACK held out right to the end when the 54th entrant gen2 (another sharp ABer) came on complaining of being delayed so that all the best words were gone! These three each picks up a bonus point (for being first) to add to their final scores. However, in view of the fact that none of these three were able to spot a second link word their scores are tied at 2 points. These are the top scores for this round!
Sharing top scores are three more ABers who scored two hits (but were not the first to declare them). These are twosearch (who truly lived up to his name), brizzer and Phil7 . These last two are newcomers to the Game and many of us would agree that this is simply beginner's luck (sour grapes all round).
