Can you predict Monday's Herculis Link words , given Saturday's shaded solutions ? All are welcome to enter, whether it's your first punt or you're a seasoned campaigner.
Hello to all Links game competitors, an exciting weekend in store as we reach the climax of our first monthly championship.
Sarumite currently sits proudly at the top pf the table, closely followed by ; addict ; gen2 ; Magyar ; rogerr and yelsel. With a whole host of others in hot pursuit.

Will Ontarioice scupper everyone with a transatlantic challenge, leading to a ceremonial burning of the original LINKS GAME rules and the transportation of those Ashes in a terracotta urn across the pond to Canada ?

I think it's fair to say that anyone could still snatch top prize with a Five Star performance this weekend.

All to play for then, as Crofter burns the midnight oil with logarithms, slide rules, and a home made super computer on which to calculate all your scores.

If the first person to solve the LINKS could post them here in the morning as usual.......and let play commence !
Thanks and the very best of luck to you all. :)

Greek fable

Gulf stream
Well, the curtain is about to fall on the final scene of the final act and those taking each their part are waiting in the wings for the grand finale.

I find it eerie that last week I was pointing out how hot a favourite wasTOWER HAMLET and likened it to the FABLE of the tortoise and the hare. This week, one of the words to be linked is FABLE (overtones of being watched by Big Brother). Needless to say AESOP(S) was the overwhelming favourite here - although one bright ABer did worry about how such a solution could be clued.

Such devious minds! Warped after years on a cryptic diet!
But what of the other Link Words?

Under TROPICAL, some 20 different options were posted with the most popular being STORM, but ISLAND being strongly fancied.

Under GRAIN, everyone's favourite tipple appeared. but out in front came the healthy option of WHOLE! Once again the field was spread over about 20 choices that would strain the imagination.

Finally under STREAM, came another 20 selections with GULF leading LINE(D) home by a good three lengths.

When asked how I spent the weekend, I shall reply "On a tropical ISLAND gently floating in the GULF stream sipping Grain WHISKY. It was FABULOUS!! ....

... but alas an illusion that could have been penned by AESOP himself! Unless Herculis pulls "a fast one", we have good coverage for a chance at getting FOUR HITS.

Fingers crossed and GOOD LUCK to you all!
Tropical Storm

Grain Alcohol

Chinese Fable

Mill Stream
Tropical Month
Slip Stream
Grain Alcohol
Greek Fable
very late this week, so will try
trpical storm
wood grain
greek fable
gulf stream
I dont know if I am the first this week but the answers appear to be

Tropical storm
grain sack
trout stream
and play fable
... Unless Herculis pulls "a fast one"! That's what I sad last night and I believe that there were TWO "fast ones" pulled!
I'm thinking of "Grain Sack" and "Play Fable". It was gardenknowin who wondered how "Aesop's" could be clued. In fact, the clue need only refer to Aesop - but the point is well taken! Both of these links were missed by all 56 entrants!

The bonus points were picked up by jan1959 and Tenter for STORM and TROUT (respectively). They are proving expert at the "originality game". Since no-one thought of both STORM and TROUT, everyone else scored 0 or 1. Hence not a week for stars!

On a mothly assessment, only keyboardix and Magyar manged to score something over all four weeks - Well done for that! Runners up (with 5 points) were
addict (who did not enter Week 4), chriss and gen2.

In all, FOUR ABers scored 6 points. They were jan1956, Magyar, sarumite and Tenter. Well done indeed!

The rules for dealing with "ties" are given in the Riddles section, and begin by looking at the "BIG HITTER" :see http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Quizzes-and-Puz zles/Riddles/Question312705.html

Since sarumite scored 4 points on Week 3 and the others scored at most 3 points, I declare the November Winner to be sarumite.
Excellent work during a difficult month!

For the December Game, the scores are set back at Zero and I suggest that we run the contest for only the first FOUR week-ends.

Apologies to yelsel who literally fell off the bottom of the page! My print-out runs to two full pages plus one ABer. Since my listing is in alphabetical order, the last line refers to yelsel who scored an impressive 5 points and started off at a gallop with 3 points in Week 1. Sadly, he was not able to sustain that pace.

Talking of which, the points profile of (4 0 0 0) from ontarioice and the canadian challenge - I can only assume that the brain slows down when the snows arrive and all civilised creatures begin to plan for hibernation! I thank you personally for making the effort to compete when you are clearly disadvantaged by differences in time zones and (perhaps) culture. As an example, there are not many TOWER HAMLETS in your neck of the woods!

In the words of Bruce Forsythe "Good Game! Good Game!"
Hi Crofter--I had 5 points last week, did I get points knocked off for some reason this week?
Thanks for all your hard work and to ShamrockBlue for a brilliant idea for a game.
Many thanks go to crofter for his analysis, hard work and wit.

Congratulations to sarumite as the first winner, and commiserations to ontarioice across the pond.

Good luck next month.
oops--I forgot to add my congratulations to Sarumite!
Oh NO! How can I have missed the Wizard from East Anglia? I can only assume that the elastic band on my home-made computer snapped half way down the second page! In fact rogerr, I had you down as someone building up a rising profile with (2 0 3 ?) .

Truth to tell, I was rushing towards the end of my lengthy posting and that (I find) always leads to mistakes being made!

I shall expect much from you in the December Contest!
Wow !! - can't believe I have actually won a competition - even though owing mainly to pure luck ! Have never won with crossword entries following numerous attempts, so this is a BIG BIG surprise.
Grateful thanks must of course go to crofter for all his hard work in making this such an enjoyable diversion.
The trouble is .. there is now only one way to go, and it's not up!!
..... and thanks again to ShamrockBlue for his original concept. (S).
Cheers crofter.
Congratulations sarumite and many thanks to crofter for organising and analysing results.
I can bask in the glory that I was only beaten on the tie break.
Unfortunately (for the game) I'm off to Spain tomorrow whilst I can get hold of the paper, at ridiculous expense, I will have no way of entering but as I scored 0 on week one I can't do any worse by not entering.
Well done, Sarumite.
It's been great fun.
Thanks crofter and ShamrockBlue for all your hard work.
Hopefully do even better next month!
Congratulations to Sarumite, commiserations to Tenter for not being able to enter December's jamboree. I live in Portugal, so rarely pay the exhorbitant cost of the Telegraph, so thanks to the dedicated ABers who supply the link words for the likes of me to take part.
Tenter - Quite often you can find a PC abroad for general use (for a small fee). If you have your password handy, you can log onto AB as yourself. There you will get all the information you need to enter the Link Game!
Thanks crofter have never had need for PC abroad before but now that it's IMPORTANT will try and find one
