Thanks Jack, had already seen that page, but think that the original shows were earlier. 1928 is probably when the Kennel Club took over. May have to hedge my bets on this one!
Take a look at this site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crufts#History (sorry that didn't paste in correctly for me).
It says the first show was in 1886 and was billed "First Great Terrier Show." I would presume by this that it was open, at that time, to just terriers. But read it for yourself and see what you think. Just trying to help you out.

Thanks ontarioice...been there, done that as they say! That`s why I thought that a terrier of some sort would be the answer, can`t get any further though. May end up phoning the Kennel Club!
Before 1928 there was no award for Best-in-Show.First winner was a Greyhound "Primely Sceptre"
