This Hull/Kingston-upon-Hull business is bad enough, but now I'm even more confused.

Coppins Crew said in an earlier post that the first answer is Hawton.

From what I've seen on the web, the author of Chronica was Roger of Howden and he served as a parson at Howden.

I don't suppose it helps that I can't find the childhood home of Percy Jeeves or the school Roger Hargreaves attended.

So is the answer Howden or Hawton?

Many thanks

The riverside town is Goole. Howden is to the north. Following the railway out of Goole, it takes the directions mentioned and passes through Brough, which was Petvaria to the Romans.

This seems pretty conclusive to me that the town must be Goole and the village must be Howden.
Definitely HOWDEN. And the large town is HULL or KINGSTON-UPON-HULL (the town he starts in is Goole)

Thanks gumboil and brainiac.

This has been a nightmare this week - I think the compiler is taking lessons from Mike Mepham!
