There are 34 dog breeds in the UK that are designated 'vulnerable' by the Kennel Club, having less than 300 pups registered in a year. On 18th June I am organising a dog show just for these 34 breeds to be held at Stoneleigh at the NAC, and anyone interested in finding our more about any of these breeds is welcome to attend.

For Ratter - we have Irish Wolfhound classes.

Other breeds are Bearded Collie, Bloodhound, Bull Terrier (Miniature), Collie (Smooth), Deerhound, English Setter, English Toy Terrier, Foxhound, Fox Terrier (Smooth), Glen of Imaal Terrier, Gordon Setter, Greyhound. Harrier, Irish Red & White Setter, Kerry Blue Terrier, King Charles Spaniel, Lakeland Terrier, Lancashire Heeler, Manchester Terrier, Mastiff, Norwich Terrier, Otterhound, Retriever (Curly Coated), Sealyham Terrier, Skye Terrier, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Spaniels (Clumber, Field, Irish Water, Sussex, Welsh Springer) and Welsh Corgi (Cardigan).

Come and meet the dogs and owners and find out about these often little known breeds that have been around for many years but could be in danger of dying out if we don't attract new owners.

Also an item on The One Show tonight features the Vulnerable Native Breeds.

thugulike - Mastiff classes too!
That is amazing but also very sad that some beautiful dogs may be out of existence in a few generations.

Is the Welsh Terrier still on the at risk list? I had several of them growing up but they were difficult and highly strung and I can understand why people may not want to take them on.
if you go back far enough aren't they all really just crossbreeds?
While on the surface, the possibility seems sad; aren't breeds a bad thing anyway with human desired characteristics ensured no matter what health issues they cause ?
//Dogs most probably evolved from wolves at a single location about 20,000 to 40,000 years ago,//

How did a wolf become a chihuahua ?

Redhelen Welsh Terriers are just above the threshold, having had 397 registered in 2022 and 417 in 2021. They did dip into the VNB list a few years back but have recovered a little.

When you consider there are over 45,000 plus Labradors registered each year you realise how vulnerable some of these breeds are.
We would certainly be interested, we are waiting for one of our bitches to come into season to breed a litter, she is a great representative of the breed and we have a great stud waiting. We have been to Stoneleigh a few times, in fact only a couple of weeks ago. How do we find out more about it?

Schedules are on Fosse Data. The breed is supported by the OEMC and Emma has also sponsored it. Kevin Young is judging the breed.

Sorry ignore my last post - confusing your breed with thugulike's Mastiffs. The IWC is supporting it and the judge is Heidi Woodgate. Sue and Terry Cole are sponsoring rosettes too.
Lankeela, We are looking into the show, I just need to organise a day off and our runner, I think we have other shows in June but we will try and make it. I would like to go to support our breed.
How did a wolf become a chihuahua ?

well the wolf DNA is identical to dog DNA
so canis domesticus ( the victorians were excellent observers) is the same as Lupus.

say a dog breeds at 5 y - then that is at 20000y - 4,000 generations, enough to breed specifically

someone asked, someone asked for chrissakes.

Nature ( journal) the wolf even has the DNA - goo-goo eyed gene, and 'looks really cute' gene,
You are aware the dog domesticated itself, ( was fed rather than hunted) and I reckon the route was - caring for the children. Eek the cavemen must have had barlz to allow a wolf near a kid but....
