Think it is more commonly used un the US. Examples cited in the dictionaries are from the west coast of America, so it might be similar to a Spanish word.

I got it in 4 by just wondering if there was such a word as nothing else seemed possible with the letters I already had.

One of those words where, if you have letters 1,2,4 and 5 (as did i) you can quickly exhaust your guesses before getting it right. As did i:-(

This is the 4th one I didn't manage to get in 179 go's.
By the 3rd line, I had 4 of the letters but still didn't get it.
Don't think I've ever used that word in my life although I dare say I've heard of it.

Yes, people who failed had the middle letter missing, and there were several options.
I have Googled the word (not definition) and didn’t find any Uk uses of the word. French, Spanish and US results only.

I got it on the sixth guess - there seemed to be only two options for the middle letter (I'd tested all the others) and I guessed right.

Well I think it’s the same one NY Times …..I’m assuming it comes out at midnight New York time, now I’m not sure if I get to it before the U K…..I do mine first thing, 7.00am Oz land and that’s 10.30pm in the UK ….oh heck, that’s too complicated :(
