The Right Hon Jeremy Hunt was pulled up by the Speaker of the House of Commons during a video link today for his dress code, as he was wearing an open necked shirt against the dress code as directed by the House of Commons.

Well done Mr Speaker.

Most of you springing to Jeremy's defence are (probably deliberately) missing the point. It's nothing to do with "clothes maketh the man" or "surgeon in pyjamas was excellent", or "men in suits can be awfully behaved" etc., it's to do with following the HoC Code. He didn't, so was rightly reprimanded.

Did he have trousers on sqad ?
Surely it matters more what he was saying? We should have outgrown this superficiality by now.
How old men's networking ridiculous!
I'm with you sqad but expect you are in for a bit of battering applauding this :-)

Not from me he won't be. If the Commons is to conduct its business remotely (and the government is encouraging others to do so) then the dress code should apply. It's bad enough seeing women climb out of a car in their pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers and head into the supermarket (and I've never seen a man do it so I'm not being sexist). I don't want to see my MP do likewise when he joins a Commons debate, remote or not. It's only a small step from an open necked shirt to a T-shirt and track suit bottoms. Covid is responsible (or rather the excuse) for all sorts of sloppy service and lower standards. There's no need for MPs to join the throng.
NJ, if your service is related to the clothes they are wearing.... I suspect we are living in different centuries.
Why not worry more about manners, respect, listening etc... I work in jeans mostly. And have a lot more respect for my clients than many people I have seen in suits.
before we know it they will be allowing women into the H.O.C.
I really couldn't care what someone is wearing.
At one time clothes maketh the the man......not any more
The chap who turned up to deliver my son was still in pyjamas. A brilliant surgeon.
The clown who messed up the removal of a BCC from my face was dressed impeccably...and didn't he know it. I only wish his tailor had removed the BCC.

I rather think one tends to go with the other, pixie.

Quite so, gness. I once needed the services of an eye doctor who saved the sight in one of my eyes from being seriously impaired. He, too, was in his pyjamas. But it was two o'clock in the morning and I didn't have an appointment. Not quite the same think, I fancy.

NJ we unfortunately cross posted.

I don't see the issue. Looks fine to me but then, who am I to judge what is and what isn't acceptable for a virtual HOC debate.
Times have changed (thank goodness). Ties are pretty pointless things anyway. I think the speaker was wrong to say anything. It was probably an oversight by Hunt. Clothes don't make the the man in my opinion.
Of course they don't, nj. That's a ridiculous presumption. As I said, I wear jeans mostly and a hoody for work. Are you suggesting I would be more honest and genuine if I wore a suit instead?
You are just showing old-fashioned prejudice here- and I'm surprised you haven't noticed differently by now.

Hardly the point, ties are apart of the Club rules, obeythem or don't join the Club.
I was lucky enough to work my whole life in an environment where the dress code was smart casual. No soft trousers, but no ties either. Neither of the CEOs I worked with over the most recent 20 years ever, ever wore a tie unless going to a funeral.
Sqad, then the old boys' network needs to wake up and go with truth instead of pretentiousness.
