If I write in my crossword a wrong answer, then use correction fluid and then write the correct answer over it, does this automatically null & void my entry ? in other words am I wasting my time by sending it ?

Generally you are NOT wasting your time sending in a corrected crossword but it may be wise to check the rules and regulations of the crossword you wish to enter.

I have won a runners-up prize with the Telegraph when covering my mistake with correction fluid and overwriting so know it does not have to ruin an entry.

Unless there are published rules saying altered entries are unacceptable, then it ought to be OK.

Most of my entries use correcting fluid. Mind you I haven't won anything for years....

Actually not true - I did win one from a very low circulation magazine a month or so back, but nothing in a major publication.

Mine are always covered in the stuff. If I can't see anything in the rules and regulations then I send them in.
Mind you I have never won anything from the ones in the newspapers.
I have won quite a few things from Lovatts and they state clearly that whiteout is acceptable.
Thanks for bringing this up - I've often wondered. I'd also be interested to know how many of the entries one posts the day before the closing date (I know, I know - one of these days I'm going to get organised) are actually delivered in time. If the Post Office estimate of c90% First Class delivered next day is correct, perhaps we should get one in ten stamps free.

A useful tip is to get the grid photocopied at the local copyshop at some 5 pence per time. If you are not sure of the answer, write in pencil and use a rubber for incorrect answers.

I note that the Radio Times crossword takes photocopied grids. In this case you could tippex out the error, photocopy and send in a clean copy.

We have bought shares in Tippex due to the quantity of the stuff we get through!!!!!
