Taken yet another call from Scottish Power...we have engineers in .....stop I said , I have told you at least ten times I DON'T WANT ONE !
Getting a bit peed off by their persistence..letters..texts..e mail..calls...even had an engineer present to fit one..is it just Scottish Power behaving like this ?

Smart meters allow the network operators and energy companies to monitor energy/time of use.Because the grid infrastructure is outdated they want you to use energy outside peak demand. With smart meters they can 'persuade' customers to do just that.....AVOID.

My electricity supplier doesn't use smart meters so no hassle at all from them
no, EDF persuaded me to have one, i did on the premise that i go over to them for my gas from BG, which i successfully did, then they installed the smart meter all at the same time. It's no bother really.
My electricity supplier called recently to ask when they could come in to fit a smart meter. I said I don't want one and there's no obligation to have one. End of call.
I had a smart meter for a long time and really found it useful.

It eventally conked out. They fitted a new one and it was junk. I unplugged it.
Why are you reluctant to have a smart meter ?

SP just don't want to take no for an answer ! If and when there is a compulsion..but till then I want to be in some kind of control..
You want to be in control of your meters ? :-)
I have one; I had no choice. NPower just came one day and fitted them throughout the block. To be honest I haven't noticed any difference, apart from the fact that the meter reader no longer calls.
that's a bonus for me, the meter can be read externally by EDF so no need to keep on giving meter readings or answering the door when the meter man comes calling.

Too many adverse reports up here of wild untrue readings, incompatibility with other providers, tariff changes etc.. and hacking....
We had one fitted a few years ago, rather than waiting on them being compulsory and a possible charge incurred. I asked the engineer if we can put the said meter in a drawer and use our gas/ electric as normal will it make any difference to our bills?,...... No. Last week we receiver a 3 figure rebate.
//...No. Last week we receiver a 3 figure rebate.//

Rebate for what anne?
I have heard that they can disconnect you via the smart meter for whatever reason they think fit, even though you are not in debt to them. If they think you are using too much electricity etc. Don't know how true this is.

True Jack...
Sorry, from my utility supplier for over payment .
No they can't, Jackdaw. You can only be disconnected in an absolute emergency, which you would be without the smart meter, or by court order.
It is true they don't need to come to property to disconnect you and can do it remotely but they can not and never will be able to disconnect you on a whim.

And why would they? They want to use electricity - that's how they make their money.

Regarding price hikes, they still have to give you the proper notice which gives you the legal right to switch providers without penalty if they put the charges up during the contract term if you are on a fixed term.
I think some on here are confusing a meter and a monitor.

Question Author
