Help please!

I have one to get and it's really stumped me

1d-Something ship relies upon in emergencies (5,6)

I think the last word must be anchor but perhaps I'm groping in the dark!

Thanks kosoro.   Even though I'm the wife of a boat owner I've never heard of it and he's not around to ask at the moment!!
I had 10 years in the Merchant Navy, I'd have kicked myself had i got that wrong

kosoro - so what's the difference between a sheet anchor and a normal anchor?

Nautical A large extra anchor intended for use in an emergency.

A source of aid in time of emergency or danger.
