It doesn't seem like a huge amount to me either Sandy.

Indeed. There was a time when I regularly had a glass of whiskey for breakfast. BUt I was younger and more able for it than I would be now.
Absolute rubbish! What about the ever so healthy 'Mediterranean diet'? people live to 100 drinking red wine like water and eating a healthy diet rich in olive oil and vegetables. You have to look at your health as a whole not just jump on one thing deemed as 'unhealthy'. IMHO people who drink a moderate amount daily have less problems than people who only drink on a weekend and binge drink. half a bottle of wine is nothing -two medium glasses which we drink every sngle night of the year with dinner and I'm damned if someone thinks I'm needing a pill to stop me .
By regular is that every single decade regularly, or every five minutes regularly ?

I think folk know when they are overdoing it even if they ignore it. That a pill may be a temporary help to those who are finding it difficult to cut down, although they don't want to stay on them. But surely the bigger issue is how to get folk to agree they do over-drink alcohol. If they are willing to take a pill they probably don't need to pill-pop but to take steps to cut down without one.
// Need A Pill To help them cut down on their intake?//

peanuts to an Irish man I agree
IMO half a bottle of wine each day is a health issue. Sure you may believe you are getting away with it for years but in calories alone you are doing yourself no favours, let alone dealing with the alcohol. Half a bottle every now and again, fine, but not daily.
I'd love to be able to say that's a stereotype and not at all true Peter, but my Irish family drink eye watering quantities of alcohol.
Kval .... and can stand up at the end of it

incredible - must be hard wired ( in the DNA )
Old-Geezer I come from a French family who have vineyards. All grandparents drank wine on a daily basis and often had a nip of calvados on a winters morning to keep the chill away. All died over the age of 80 and had a happy life. Half a bottle of wine has NO FAT and around 400 calories about the same as a packet of crisps and two chocolate biscuits which can be eaten almost unnoticed with a couple of mugs of sugary coffee (100 calories) so I really don't think people are going to get obese drinking a couple of glasses of wine a day.
They were lucky to have DNA that coped.
Many a time we hear someone has stopped their wine habit and found they lost loads of weight.
Old_Geezer ''Many a time we hear someone has stopped their wine habit and found they lost loads of weight.'' really? Unless they are replacing wine with water they are still taking in calories -replace two glasses of wine with two glasses of fruit juice and you are no better off with regard to calories. From a personalpoint of view I'd rather be a few pounds overweight (which I'm not) and enjoy my life than be a miserable skinny b++ch lol!
Replace a drug (alcohol) with a drug (Nalmefene).

Marvellous.
They have admitted the alcohol units guidelines are unscientific and flawed.

There are so many variables between people that a one recommendation fits all is useless.

It is no coincidence that the daily recommended units and the drink drive units recommendations are closely aligned.
Forget calories and obesity........that isn't the point.

Liver disease is causing more deaths now than ever and these alcohol related deaths are affecting younger people, sometimes as young as late 30 's.

There are not enough donors for the required liver transplants due to excess alcohol intake........so many more are dying.

Retrochic:

\\\\Absolute rubbish! What about the ever so healthy 'Mediterranean diet'? people live to 100 drinking red wine like water \\

No they don't....they do drink wine but generally in a regulated and modest way.........and almost ALWAYS with water.

These are the facts.........the choice is yours.

///£3 Pill Stops You Wanting Second Glass Of Wine///

£3 also buys me the second glass of Wine thank you Nanny!!!
It knackers your liver in the long term so yes, I think half a bottle of wine a day is a lot.
And saying your grandparents drank a lot and lived to be over 80 is like saying your Dad smoked 20 cigarettes a day and lived to be 80. He might, but the next person might not.
Sqad I would be interested to know what you class as 'moderate' alcohol consumption? My guess is you consume a couple of glasses of wine a day with your meal ,maybe I'm wrong I'm sure you will correct me. As for my grandparents (and parents and me) taking our wine with water , you are kidding right? LOL!

no its not, its like saying they smoked two cigarettes a day and lived until they were 80. We are not talking about alcoholics or binge drinking here but people who drink wine moderately every day
