....... Ok, so I grabbed a yoghurt out of the fridge yesterday, then noticed it was a "bit" out of date - best before 2nd July 2013 ..... only just over 2 months out of date !!!!

........ well it smelt ok and it looked ok, so down the hatch it went ....... and it tasted ok too :)

I'm just wondering where everyone draws the line when it comes to eating out of date food ??

I'm still here and suffered no adverse side effects :)

Just two months out of date? I've had chocolate mousse that are 4 months out of date. I'm a big dodgy with milk though as I don't have a very good sense of smell and the taste of gone of milk is vile. I've got tins of beans dated 1992 and they are still alright to munch. Last year I supped a bottle of Bass Bitter dated 1984, it didn't even state the ABV% content it was that...

I don't have a line as such, if it looks ok and smells ok then I'll eat it.
If doesn't pong and isn't wearing a fur coat I'll give it a go.

I am more cautious when feeding visitors, elderly and/ or the infirm and paying punters.
Oh my word, that would have gone straight in the bin. The only thing I would eat past its date would be chocolate (but only by a week I reckon). Everything else goes in the bin! I am very conscious about best before dates.
Yoghurt - if you open it and it's not actually "fizzing"...it's fine. No date required!
I go by the "eat by". If it's "best before" I'll see what it looks and smells like.
I went back to the house we vacated before christmas and found a tub of greek yoghurt in the fridge, use by date 8 months ago, seemed to be OK so I ate it. It tasted fine, that was a month ago, so far no ill effects.
MissC - perhaps you don't know the difference between "use by" and "best before"?
If i smells and looks ok i usually eat it well after the use by date. However a yoghurt 2 months out of date might have ended up in the bin.
I wouldn't eat it.

I wish I could be like the 'if it looks ok, smells ok' type of people, but I'm not...

I'd let the other people in the house eat it though :-)

Mmmm, I wonder if Giz has any yogurt left.......
I wouldn't have eaten this, not after two months.

I'm very careful about what I eat since having salmonella a few years ago.
Best before dates are only guides. You need to use common sense. The likely hood of getting ill from something that is out of date is relatively slim. I'd be most concerned about meat, but there are so many variables that can affect food quality. If storage is not adequate you are just as likely to get sick from something that is in date. As I said-exercise common sense.
MissComando-what do you think will happen to you-or the chocolate-if its out of date by one week?
A day or two over the `best before' date. Any more than that and it#s a visit to the bin.
Yes, pasta is right. They are just a guide. "Use by" is government -controlled and covers anything that could become dangerous.
Best before is not the same as 'use by',which is more specific. With 'bb',its quality that is usually affected-not necessarily safety. What on earth did our parents do with no dates on everything they bought?
I have a very weak immune system so I have to be fairly careful when it comes to use by dates. It does infuriate me when I have to throw food away that seems fine in appearance smell etc. though.
Let me get this straight... warm goat's or cow's milk is injected with Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, and you're worried about it going off?... Unique concept!

Kinda like the ancient things found in Pharaoh's tombs... some say they're still edibile...
