Glorious Twelfth ...

How long does it take for the grouse to get down to the south coast?

In time for dinner tomorrow, maybe?

No chance of making it south of Hadrian s wall I think, jj.
It may be the 'Glorious 12th' for some but its bloody awful here. Huge 4x4's snaking onto the moors, tweed-clad hoorah henry's who can't even shoot straight, corporate loud-mouthed oafs trying to be something they're not....and all those lovely beautiful birds shot for 'Sport' -No thanks.
Those grouse have a far better life than battery chickens.
Oh to be on erica now that the 12th is here.....
Good that you're a sporting gal, JJ.
If game was the only meat I'd become a vegetarian. I find it Acrid.
hc4361 ''Those grouse have a far better life than battery chickens.''

your point? many animals have much better lives than battery chickens -but people don't shoot them for sport. Have you ever seen a grouse or pheasant shoot? And before playing the 'well if you eat meat you should not be. complaining' card -they are not bred for food they are bred for sport.
shoota -unless you have around £1,200 for a days 'sport' (assuming you can actually shoot 10 brace) you'd get chased off the Erica up here in Teesdale/Weardale -its all owned by the Arabs and they don't have Gamekeepers as such -they have Henchmen.
C'mon, Shoota.....sporting gal?

Killing birds for the pleasure and thrill of killing is not sport by any stretch of the imagination.
IYO
No...even if you are one of the clowns who does it for the dubious pleasure or because there is something lacking in them...it is still not....sport.
Do it by all means but don't let it be called sport...it isn't.
Shooting is a sport.
Then practice your sport on something that doesn't have a pulse?
I shoot clays and targets for sport......Killing birds.....no way. That is just hiding behind the term....Sport...because no-one will say....Let's go and kill as many birds as we can today.
Tell me why it is good to breed birds to be shot because it really is beyond my understanding.

With you there gness,
My last live target shoot involved an Argie or three
back in the early 80's
Havn't time now G, taking my dog and gun and going shooting.
Not grouse, but it's a little tradition of mine to always pull a trigger on the 12th if poss.
So we might have pigeon breasts this evening or a rabbit stew tomorrow depending on what pops up.
Later. X
Isn`t fishing a sport too? Nobody seems to worry about eating fish that have been caught for sport so I don`t see why grouse are any different.
Hi Baldric....they were armed too I guess....a grouse with a rifle I have yet to see...x
237....To knock down my argument you would have to say I eat fish caught for sport.

I guess that would make them Snipe then?
237SJ Grouse are bred to be shot for sport, there are very few wild grouse left and those are mainly escapees. Although I would not do it myself unless starving, I have no problem with anyone shooting a wild animal then eating it (they are very unhealthy to eat as usually full of worms or other parasites) . Same with fishing, wild fish, they have a chance to escape and probably better than the trawling methods used to catch your cod and haddock.
