St Athan?
Derived from St Tathan
Saint Tathan (also known as Tatheus) is claimed to be a Celtic saint, who travelled from Ireland to Wales where he founded a Christian church. An alternative claim is that Tathan was female, originating from Britain.

Sorry Dave I cannot parse it and in truth is a bit of a stab, so may be wrong.

Thank you again Mamyalynne.

As I said it is always nice to know why but the other letters are correct and I can't come up with anything else !

Here you have it Tommo33

10a .....mass stand by the navy one following the French revolution.....
My answer is Altar (tar=navy la revolution =al +tar =altar

Does that help ?
Sorry. Just seen it. Regret none the wiser, but I thought it worth asking. The answer I fancied was Abran, (bar = except with the a advanced), but it doesn't fit your lettering, and there doesn't seem to be any Welsh connection.
