5 penguins
Question Author
great thanks but how did you reach that answer please
I got 5 penguins as well

elk=4 polar bear=2 penguin=1
simple algebra - let E = elk, B = bear, P = penguin

1st equation: E - B = P
rearranged: E - P = -B

2nd equation: E + 3P = 3B

subtract rearranged 1st from the 2nd to get: 4P = 2B i.e. B = 2P
substitute that in 1st equation to get: E = 3P

thus 3rd equation gives: B + E = 2P + 3P = 5P
OOPS elk=3
