My husband's elusive great-grandfather was Reginald Hinckley. According to the 1871 Census when he was 4 years, he had been born in 1867 in Surrey, the son of Reginald snr & his wife Fanny (nee Russell).

On the 1881 Census, Reginald is entered as a Printer's Labourer, aged 14 & born in Walworth, Surrey.

His father used the name Reginald Hinckley O'Leary when he married Fanny Russell in 1866 but seems to have dropped O'Leary soon afterwards.

I have searched the records under Hinckley, Hinckley O'Leary & O'Leary for details of Reginald's birth certificate so that I can apply for a copy but can find no trace at all. He joined the army, later went to South Africa, & died there.

Can anyone please help me to trace this elusive ancestor's birth record?

How frustrating - I have searched for every wildcard, spelling and combination I can think of on both ancestry and freebmd sites - to no avail ......................is it possible Reginald was a middle name and so he is registered at birth with another forename?

Thanks so much for searching on my behalf. I'm pretty certain that Reginald had just the one name. We have his army records, downloaded from the internet, & just the one name is given there & also on the two census returns we have.

He seems to have been a mystery man!
He is listed as HINCHLEY on the 1871 ..... have you looked for births for this spelling?
Nothing ads HINCHLEY either, sorry.
My Great Grandfather was registered, at birth, as Llewellen; he married as George Llewellyn and is named Laurence Llewellyn on his death certificate!

The only 'likely' record on FreeBMD, which I am sure you will have already seen is this;
Births Mar 1/4 1866
Robert H Hinckley
Newington 1d 252

It might be worth ordering the certificate to see if it is him, or a sibling and may provide some answers.
Or this one:
Thomas James Hinchey

Jan-Feb-Mar 1867

Bermondsey

Surrey
