Q9. In which year did May Day (ie the first Monday in may) become an official additional bank holiday in the whole of the UK?

I have conflicting information here. I have found references to both 1975 and 1978 and cannot decide between them.

Can anyone please help to decipher this variation.

Thanks

I have found a website giving the answer as 1978. As it provides no details, I leave it to you to judge the accuracy of the information.

The DTI gives some more information here.

The DTI site seems to give the impression that it wasn't made a bank holiday in Scotland in 1978, so as the question refers to the "whole of the UK", I'm still undecided.

The 2nd paragraph in the following link refers to 1975.  http://www.cpgb.org.uk/worker/478/rewinning.html

I found a site which gave a definite answer of 1978.  Don't know where it was though or you could have checked.

Forgot to mention that it did say it was the whole of the UK.

From here "In 1978, the first Monday in May in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the last Monday in May in Scotland, became additional bank holidays. (The first Monday in May was already a Bank Holiday in Scotland..... )"

So if it were me, I'd say 1978 is the answer

I agree with 1978.  I always appreciate THE CORBYLOON's contributions and here again I have read the info on a couple of sites that verify the loons answer so we shal be going with that.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I'll go with 1978 too. I have certainly found more sites that give this date, although there are about 5 or 6 that say 1975.

Just goes to show you can't believe everything you read!
