19a If vale has a misprint could be Geneva

Sorry. a bit late there i think : /

Thanks, a great help.
You've headed up the wrong track I fear. The misprint is in vale (2nd letter) and the clue leads to a city without 'lake'. It doesn't help that the grid entry should be one of the shortened ones

Aha. I see it now : )

Re 19 A, I realised 'geneva' was wrong when I determined my 's' was definitely correct. Am still working on it!
Question Author
I've settled on 'debase'(debased, shortened) - because of 'vile' and because I took the 'l'(overlooking lake) out of Basle.

Am still tackling this.
23 A. Rue Mexican dancer shunning a prominent feature (7) ??????t
As well as the possible misprint, I should have said that 'lengths in some clues do not correspond to grid entries'.
I think the suggestions for both 14ac (shooty) and 19d (QA) are off the mark. The last sentence in the preamble is worth bearing in mind.
please put me out of my misery. (Sevelen) tell me this is correct ?
It depends what the question is, Shooty, but if you mean for 19ac in I. 1222, it is wrong. I suggest you read the preamble again and parse the clue in the light of the hints already given.
I don't see how 19ac can be "DEBASE", as VILE is an adjective which can't define DEBASE, which is a verb.
Question Author
I re-read the preamble as suggested - my answer's now simply 'base'.The preamble said some grid entries aren't the correct length.
I think the answer to 19 across must be "BASE" but this means it is not to be entered in the grid at the position indicated by the 19. Is that right?
Almost there - I have the character and only 17d and the intersecting unclued entry to find.

Is the A of 23 in 17d? I thought CREEDS for 17d but can't fit that in.
