Thanks for the answers. I have "Embellishment"(28D) "Eased" 32D "Crescendo" 36D, so I think that the answer is an anagram of "Riddles" but can' figure it out.

I agree with you both that it should be
enigmas, but the compiler of the crossword
has fouled it up. The only answer that fits
the crossword is riddles.
