Yes, where is Smokey ?
If you have a Mac, use Preview to open the PDF , not Adobe. Select the left half of the puzzle. Crop. Then print the result. Do the same for the right hand side and you have two neat sheets of reasonable size.

As a migrant from The Listener I see a few familiar figures appearing in this string.
I'm most of the way there but am mystified by 8ac in D and my 3dn appears to be an illegitimate spelling. I haven't got the theme in B and I still have a few gaps in the bottom right-hand corner of E. Favourite clue: 21dn in D.
Oh, and I have two setters in B and none in D or E, but maybe their names are not famiiar to me.
Hi contendo

Welcome to the Spectator thread.
8a in Grid B is linked with 16a.
3d Is in Chambers but hyphened

The setters are in the same position in all the grids.
Kayakamana - thanks for your comments, but my queries relate to grid D, not B, and there is no 16ac in grid D. Have now completed grid E. The two initials - I can see two initials of a relevant character in two adjacent clues but that seems a bit of a long shot.
I'm sorry about that- I really must get stronger glasses.

Grid D
8a Symbol + last five letters from original 9 letter answer.
3d Fit & A Viol (fiddle)
Those 2 are indeed a red herring contendo - the initials required are those of another animated character who shares K's current affliction !
Thanks Kayakamina. I finally got there. Mysterons - Are you sure you're right? My character was generally known by his initials, but I don't think yours was, though admittedly they are more relevant to the general theme.
I think it has to be the character referred to by Mysterons contendo, as the preamble says the item is "appearing, though not as an entry, in the grid." , whereas the red herring is an unclued entry.
The one I'm suggesting is not an unclued entry. It is, like the other one (who is the setter), a pair of initials in adjacent entries
Sorry contendo - my misunderstanding - different red herring.
I didn't really think of that pair as being part of a connected item.
K and contendo

8a Grid D

Doesn't the symbol have to be "/" ?
Hi ixion

yes / is what I used.
still struggling with B...I have the group members, but the missing letters in 6d, 13a and 21d are eluding me. Feeling a bit thick!
Hi Freiheid, I think you need N; O; & P.
Can you or someone put me out of my misery with Grid E 18A? What is the unchecked letter & why?
Forget my question - having puzzled for hours the minute I seek help the answer comes! Brain back in gear - at least temporarily.
