Although this is crofter launching these proceedings, I am happy to accept the generous offer of tearinghair to set this week’s MM Links in the continued (and increasingly worrying) absence of caslass. Nevertheless, I find it exciting to learn a little more of my fellow AB linkers ~ the stories behind the various nom de plumes.

TEARINGHAIR writes:
Good morning everyone and welcome to an unexpected ‘one-off’, which is a stand-in (Plan “D”) for this third week in June. After Aquagility’s amazing revelations in May, I’m afraid this is all going to sound very mundane! Those of you who remember my preambles from last September may recall that I have a tendency towards being a Grumpy Old Woman. I shall do my best to avoid this (despite the temptation!) as I recall some of the episodes relating to my chosen career of teaching.

I think I knew from about the age of seven that I would be a teacher. I did flirt for a while with the idea of becoming a librarian, and spent my school and university holidays working in the local library. However, it was not to be (it wasn’t really ‘me’) and so began a very happy period of about 35 years until arthritis brought it to a premature close. I taught secondary-age pupils, in both mixed comprehensive and single-sex grammar schools. I’m not going to be drawn into the politics of these contrasting systems here, though you may throw metaphorical rotten tomatoes at me if you wish! I have even taught adults in evening classes.

For the last 25 years (I continued with this activity after I’d ‘retired’ from teaching) I was an examiner, beginning as a marker and eventually setting papers. I started with AS-level (when the ‘S’ meant ‘Supplementary’) then A-level and finally AS again (this time ‘S’ standing for ‘Subsidiary’). I dare not say more on that subject; even though I’m no longer examining, since I suspect certain clauses concerning confidentiality as part of my contract still apply. I have no wish to be carted off to the Tower for revealing ‘state secrets’!
Oh crikey,
Sit up straight at the back there.

There were, of course, many changes in both teaching and examining during these years, but as I said at the beginning I shall resist the temptation to comment further. What has not changed is crofter’s system for assessing the MM Links game and I have followed the usual rule on word length. Each of my chosen link words contains at least four letters and at most eight. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts! Each of my selected words may go in front of or after my challenge word. The competition will officially close at 7.00pm on Sunday evening when I shall declare my selected words, then apply the same rules for awarding points that have been applied during all MM Link Games in the past. This third set of four words to have their links predicted will appear below at 9.00am.
You're quite safe, Strix. I've broken my knuckle-wrapping ruler in two and sent it to the recycle bin.
...and as you see, I've forgotten how to spell. Knuckle-rapping, even.
I've got a feeling this is going to be Black, Board, Chalk, Cane!!!
