Here is a link to 'Round pound and penny' by Doc.

http://thespectator.n...om/epaper/viewer.aspx

An early start as I have been invited to a special assembly at my Grandson's school.
Fortunately the puzzle was reasonably straightforward except for the SW corner & 43a!

Of course, with it being set by Doc, reference to Brewer is necessary, and the theme is
certainly applicable to me!

Many thanks, K.
I eagerly await the PDF link!
Thanks kayakamina. I may not get to this until this evening but after Lavatch made my brain hurt for a while last week 'Welcome back Doc!'
I have an extra unclued light. Any explanation anyone?

I am away for next two weeks. Not sure if I'll have internet access. So you'll have to rely solely on the normal efficiency of K.
In fact, it works well, but there seem to be six, not five, other unclued lights.

Hi Ruthrobin

I agree that there are 6 unclued lights.

As I mentioned in my opening remarks I am dubious about the SW corner as there appears to be at least two words which match the theme.

Have I gone wrong somewhere?
Yes, Kayakamina, I think you may have gone wrong since, for me, 39ac confirms the only possibility. (38 ac begins the next word and limits the choice.)
Hi K
I've found no anomaly in SW corner!
And did you mean 43across?
Wihout giving anything away to others, can you elaborate?
Question Author
Hi Mark

I'm going to have another look as I thought I could see at least two words ending with L that fit the grid and the theme.

I think you and Ruthrobin are probably correct but I'll just satisfy myself.

Nice to talk to you again.

Regards K
Many thanks for the links. I shall look forward to starting this one later.
Apologies Kayakamina!

I agree with Ruthrobin and the highly successful MLN:RUGBY re the S.W. corner.

Ruthrobin is right in stating there are six unclued lights.

Hi novalis

MLN & I are old friends and I'm very aware of his expertise and success.

In another post above I agreed with Ruthrobin on the number of unclued lights.

Thanks for your confrmation of the SW corner.
Hi again K

Glad you sorted SW corner.
&
Novalis was just echoing congratulations, thanks ;-)

I think I've done this, but my Brewer is very (very) old and does not have all the answers. I'm reasonably happy with checks made online, but again cannot find an online version of Brewer that confirms all. Does anyone know if such a thing is available? For what it's worth, I concur with the observation that there are six internal unclued lights. Does anyone else think that 23 across might have two solutions (though one only appears, so far as I can tell with my limited resources, as the beginning of a longer phrase)?
Can't quite see what goes in between 1 and the space before 8. I have
??EA?AM?ON?
and need answers of one and two words. Otherwise, all done. I agree with Zabadak that it is a run-around to get all the Brewer's references
Zabadak - this is a useful site - you can select Brewer from the dropdown menu top right. I haven't checked to see if they all come up.
http://bartleby.com/
..well, having checked they don't unfortunately, but 23a does.
As regards 23a I suppose the second option (alphabetically) is preferred as it is plural whereas the first (not in my edition of Brewer) can be singular or plural.

Lubumbashi, you need to start with a three letter word, followed by a four letter word.
Thanks Slaney, it helps if one doesn't jump to conclusions at 8 - it fogs the thinking.
I'm glad I'm not the only one a bit confused.

The preamble states that of the 9 unclued lights running around the perimeter there are 2 of two words.
My final solution has 3! Two along the top row starting with T & B and another along the bottom row starting with L.

Have I plucked the wrong words from my old Brewer?
