Bluebell looks OK. 'Blue the lot on the horses' = wasted and beauty=bell (e)
2d Alehouse ....A Louse + Eh (what!)

8d Bluebell.....Blue (waste!) Bell(e) -beauty.
Question Author
Wouldn't that be blew the lot on horses, and why Scottish? I wondered about BLAEBELL as well.
"on the air" means that the answer "sounds like" i.e. blew belle = bluebell

Thanks, looks like I had 1a wrong. I had epidemic, it is pandemic, then alehouse fits. Thanks a lot everyone.
No, the verb is 'to blue' meaning to waste or squander. Nothing to do with 'to blow/blew'.
Question Author
Fancy that. I always thought that it was blow, present, or blew, past, in the sense of blowing it away. Learn something every day. Thanks.
