I have just purchased and installed Norton Systemworks Basic Edition 12.0 on our desktop and two laptops. Is this enough security as I keep getting a message saying that no antivirus software can be detected on my desktop computer. However, this message does not appear on the laptops.

Your subject is "Norton Security" but you are talking about "Norton SystemWorks".

As far as I can see by searching the web SystemWorks does not include ANY security software.

As its name implies, it is for fixing Windows problems, defragmenting disks, clearing out unwanted files etc.

If you have just bought this thinking it would add security to your computer I am afraid you have wasted your money.
he's not wrong you know -

now you need a virus scanner and firewall

the all in one options tend to be easiest to manage.
Many laptops come with trial security software installed already (60 day of McAfee for example).

So this may be why you are not getting any warnings from the laptops.

However if this trial has run out then even though you have security software on your laptops it may not be doing any good.

The best thing to do is open up the Windows Security Centre and see what that says you have installed (do this on each PC or laptop).

You can find the security centre in the Windows Control Panel.

Taking the details from the Security Centre make a note of what FIREWALL you have installed, what ANTI VIRUS you have instaled, plus details of any other security software you have installed (like Defender for example).

If you have not used the security centre before it looks like this (slightly different in XP and Vista):

There are plenty of all-in-one security packages around, and if you want a Norton solution then Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security are available.

But there are other all-in-one security packages availabe as well like Kaspersky which is rated highly.

Be sure to shop around for these all-in-one packages as the price can vary wildly.

Of course many of us dont pay anything for our computer security (legally).

I use a free version of Zone Alarm firewall, I use a free version of Avast anti virus, and I use other free products like Malwarebytes, Adaware and so on.

While it means installing 3 or 4 programs, it means I pay nothing for my PC security on the 4 PCs in my house.
