Prayer books worrying non-Catholic American (3,5). AVE MARIA. Def. is fine but can't work out the wordplay on this, except that possibly RC (Roman Catholic) is removed from AMERICAN.

If it were America rather than American I could understand it - AV = Authorised Version = books + anag of America minus C(atholic). But I can't account for the N.
