I think your other one is going to be SINK UNIT but cannot fully explain the wordplay.

You were right with sink unit SIN(wrong)KNIT(get together) including U (turn)

My L was wrong

Yes, we both found out that 9a is MAINSPRING, not WELLSPRING.
