This is not going frightfully well. Had got one letter of the author, made a stab at ther name, even found a plausible quotation, now realise that that's all wrong. So four days in, about 12 answers, lots of clashes and no nearer understanding what the theme is. Not sure Mr Green will be getting the pleasure of my entry this week... ) :
Funny old business - letting off steam and all that. Within a minute of psoting my gripe I'd figured out author and quote. Maybe my trawl through the oeuvre of Ms Burnett will come in handy another time... Still an awfully long way to go
Cruncher

Seth Mould's second posting is critical. I would have been done without it. I shan't be troubling the scorers either.
thank you Rapparee.
your'e help has given me a breakthrough
i am unimpressed with many of the clues though
I'm going to have to admit defeat on this one - though 15ac was one of first clues I solved- but husband is starting to complain about unironed shirts and lack of home cooking.
Don't blame you Patch49! End in sight now but this one has been a real slog. Not convinced that the quote explains the adjustment to the across answers and also found a number of the clues pretty cumbersome. Thanks for the support, bobbycollins, although in the end I couldn't see it until I saw it for myself.
Well done to all who finally got there. I was lucky to crack this one very early, but the scary thought is that we will all have a fun mathematical one to face this weekend!
Get ready & good luck
The weather in North Wales was pretty good thank you cluelessJoe - I'm now looking forward to tomorrow's numerical.
Only just got back from holiday and am finding this a real struggle. I don't think I'm on Poat's wavelength at all as I find many of the clues impenetrable. Amazed that some of you guessed the theme and author so early after only a few answers. I've got two letters of the author (I think) but that's all. Any subtle (or not so subtle) hints would be welcome!
The seven letters of the Irish author's name are comprised of two initials and a surname. The puzzle's title hints at the name of the work in 1ac 35.
For hints on how to enter across answers see Seth Mould's last posting above in this thread.
If you need more explicit hints just ask.
Many thanks, Rapparee. I assumed that the surname had 7 letters.
Got both authors, the title and the line (I think) but can't see how to use the line. Any more hints welcome! The trouble is I'm still having to cold solve the clues which is very difficult. After completing Sabre's xwd (eventually) I'm finding this one very frustrating. Oh well, another couple of days then on to the mathematical one.
Jamesah, read the second part of the line literally for indication of how to enter the down clues

keep plugging away and bon chance!
Yes, I thought that it meant leaving out the central letter but that didn't seem to work as it gave me two 'B's in 13 ac whereas there should only be one. I'll keep thinking!
Jamesah - you're right it does mean leaving out the central letter.

Big Hint:- 13a actually ends up with 3 'Bs' in it!
Many thanks Rapparee. I'll ponder the big hint!
Got both methods of entry now, plenty of empty spaces in the grid still but I'll work on those. The link between the 'line' and the method of entry for the across clues seems tenuous to me although the fact that all across answers have an even number of letters was a hint. Thanks to all who helped.
Got there in the end although the link between the 'line' and the method of entry for the across clues seems pretty tenuous to me. Thanks for all the help . All I have to do now is to complete the grid!
