Some people think BluRay has already won.

Recently two film studios decided to stop producing HD DVDs and only produce Blu Ray. Many already only produce Blu Ray.

But this is not a sprint but a marathon so, like jno, I dont think it is fully over yet.

There is a lot on money floating around (some studios are being given money to "encourage" them to stick with one format or the other)

Microsoft are very keen for HD DVD to succeed because they wrote the software that manages it, whereas Blu Ray is run on Java software, and Microsoft have always been anti-Java as it is an undustry standard not owned by Microsoft.

So lets see how it pans out over the next year or so.
Definitely blu-ray
'vehelpfulguy' presents the logical argument, but it's the power of the market place that dictates!! ........betamax should have won the vcr battle on reasoned argument.
Blu-ray is ahead and I believe that 2008 will place them in the 'winners circle'
call me cynical (ethel does ;-)

but the trades do agree with the others - blu ..... HOWEVER everyone agrees also that the takeup on the whole HD thing is virtually at a standstill (sky is still running only a few experimental chanels [more an example that a service] ) ....

production is stopping .... because no one is buying.

my opinion is it's because ppl don't sit with their noses pressed to the TX screen in the same way as to a PC monitor ..... as an old gimbert with failing eyes .... I can see there is a difference ..... but changing to the cartoon chanel gives a clearer picture in standard res ....

or will hd downloads overtake them both?
Microsoft has a long history of sticking with failed formats and using its dominance of the home computer market to push poor software which it has a proprietary involvement with.

Downloads are the future of film purchasing in the future, and will be viewable via computer on your television or hand held viewer. There will still be a market for a hi-Def DVD format that people can buy in the shops, but its potential market is diminishing before it has even arrived.

I suspect Blu ray will win as the finishing line is in sight at the moment, but it is a race that is increasingly looking pointless.
Ive been told Microsoft will stop building hd-dvd add ons for the \x-box 360 from May this year.
