Any guitar can be used to play lead or rhythm.

You're right, the tele does tend to get used for rhythm because of its thinner sound but some notables have used it to great effect for lead work e.g Roy Buchannan or even Francis Rossi from Status Quo.

I was into a band called Green on Red in the mid- 80's and the guitarist Chuck Prophet (now doing really good solo stuff) played fantastic lead on a tele!
It can be used as anything, any guitar can.

There's enough amps and guitar effects out there to get any sound out of any guitar.
