Pondering when the assumption that 666 is the mark of the beast?

When was it decided that the number 666 was the mark of the beast, that will be put on the hand and head of those that don't believe in God? I have looked in the Bible, but can't find any reference to any curtain number as being THE number as the mark of the beast.

it is a way of identifying the antichrist who is said will be just like a normal man, as to why its 666 no one really knows for sure some think its a code of some kind and if you break it it will reveal the identity of the antichrist.
