a police officer in massachussets was called into a 8th grade (year 9 equivalent in uk) classroom in order to seize a single reported copy of the book "Gender Queer" by Maia Kobabe. the officer was told by a single anonymous report that the book contained obscene and pornographic images.

what's the greater threat to schoolchildren? a book about gender identity or a person who sends police into their classrooms?

very bizarre. I thought Massachusetts was one of the more civilised states.

Question Author

there is such a large gulf between what the USA thinks it is and what it actually is

What is it?

They really are pigs over there.

Question Author

"What is it?"

a eugenecist empire with about 3 or 4 very different countries inside it.

Are you referring to the authorities or whoever reported a potential illegal incident ? Are police supposed to ignore reports of crime on school premises ?

Question Author

the wording of my question is quite clear that I am talking about the person who reported it OG... though i do question the police sending an officer into a school looking for a book

Question Author

what was the "potential illegal incident" by the way? the officer in question was searching for a single copy of a traditionally published comic book

//what's the greater threat to schoolchildren? a book about gender identity or a person who sends police into their classrooms? //

I've taken the time to read a bit about it, and I'd say the book is by far the greater threat.  You use what I imagine you consider trendy woke language and pose this question as though the book is practically unknown.  It isn't.  Having been banned in several areas as pornographic, it's highly controversial and, in my opinion, has no place in a school library.  I don't want people with ideas such as the author embraces influencing my children in any way whatsoever.  This damaging and destructive 'fashion' serves only to create unnecessary confusion in the young and to destroy completely the innocence of childhood.

Question Author

What do you think is damaging about it?

Question Author

remember we are talking about year 9 equivalent here... at that age young people do start to think about sex and identity and to ask questions about it. we're not talking about 6 year olds

I've told you what I think is damaging about it.

Question Author

would you call in the cops to remove it from a school naomi?

" I don't want people with ideas such as the author embraces influencing my children in any way whatsoever.  "

actually here's a better question... what if Gender Queer was something that your child (who remember is aged 13-14 in this scenario) needed or wanted to read?

I would do whatever was necessary to have it removed from the school.  No one 'needs' to read it.

I've not read the article yet, nor am I familiar with the book. What I do know is that far less offensive books are being removed from shelves in both school and public libraries all across the country. And it's on the increase. Quite worrying.

You raise a good point, paasta.  Classics are being edited lest the originals offend precious sensibilities and yet this is defended.   We inhabit an increasingly wonky world.
