Synecdoche - "hand" for the person you're asking for help (I think!)

Thanks L.I.K.  Read it, but not a clue what it means?

Hi Davey - I always struggle to put into words what I want to say for "synecdoche".  I don't know if it's any use, but I just thought to check another site & it seems to agree with my effort & offers -

"...the clue is a cryptic definition of an example of using this figure of speech, where the ‘hand’ is substituted for the person you ware [sic] asking for help"

I hope someone here can explain it more concisely for you 🤨

For example, can you give me a hand might be said when you really mean, can you help me with this job please. (You don't just want a hand you need their mind and body for what could be quite a big task.)

Sorry, been away from the screen.

Ta nma, that'll do 🙂

Thanks L.I.K. and nma. That's a lot clearer. Much appreciated.
