Good afternoon, got hold of this week’s EV and it’s no pie crust for me!
Solved a few, but am yet to completely fathom Jaques’s picture. Help
with the following would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

11a Flap having two roles, taking stage finally –not on to start with ( 6 ) ????N?
27a Reckoning for apocalyptic horsemen to be loosed from all time? ( 7 ) ?????D?
38a Bridge inside thing with ears, like pons’s location? ( 8 ) ?????M??
6 Priest and priestess held in contempt, scourge of the Bible ( 8 ) ???L????
12 “Quaint” covering number for Fibonacci ( 8. 2 words ) ?????N??
14 Abused caste enslaved by refined in repressive regime ( 11, 2 words ) ?N?????????

( Eight clues have no obvious definition and have wordplay to only part of the answer. Solvers must enter the other part, occasionally ignoring articles, which should allow them to see the PIE CRUST. Information in brackets refers to entries. Chambers Dictionary ( 2016 ) is recommended. )

PS it is hidden in the clue!
4d Your E is wrong
Anagram Mascot + h(ard)
17d both the O and the first N are wrong
A 7 letter word for sprinkling with a C for cocaine inserted = leaving
23a The O is wrong
a4 letter stoned fruit with an I for Italy inserted = a Roman javelin
Question Author
Thanks, jj, got them except for 17d. 7 letter word for "sprinkling" begins with? and ends with?
And hints for 15a? : ??R??
17d begins with S and ends with ING

I don't know how to give you a clue without giving the answer for 15a, so I shall just say that it ens in "N" and it's second letter is a "G"
17 If a state leaves a union then it is S????ING from that union - the "sprinkling" is correct but in the form of for example sprinkling ????? on a lawn to fill in the bare patches = S???ING, but then insert a C to get "leaving"
Question Author
Just got it, JJ, thanks for the patient hinting! About 15a?
And then I'll see how much more of this I can work out.
Matakari, 15 A is Agrin (my hints have been specactular failures in the past!).
JJ, Matakari was still asking about 15 A, so I cut to the quick - and gave the answer!
JJ, sorry - I meant 'cut to the chase'!

Good evening, finally the penny dropped for the theme. The picture is quite
clear to me and it was like going back to the movies! It's obvious that Jaques has achieved a veritable tour de force here. I am still at sea, though, with the range of his setting technique as a few clues continue to stump me. Hints for this final lot should help to put this one to rest, thank you!

10a Appear delirious lacking doctor that’s sound for disease ( 4 ) : ?AL? ( PALE )
1d One close to rudder and close to stern (4 ) : I??N
5d Wily old fox put up in court ( 4 ) : F?LE ( FILE )
18d How gone when Arabic chiefs returned for gallery’s top pictures ( 5 ) : SK?OS ( SKEOS )
30d Irritation no hot food’s served here ( 4 ) : ?ATE
Matakari, I'm so glad you got to enjoy some of the fun of this.
I think the clues in your latest batch are comparable to some Spectator puzzles, but...
30 Take the 'h', hot, out of a five letter word for irritation, and you'll be left with a casual eating place.
1 D. Your have the first letter, one, add the 'close to rudder' (common in crosswords) and add a two-letter 'close to' as a verb, often used in puzzles. The answer will be Stern...
18 D Take the How out of the usual Arab chiefs and reverse it for 'gallery's top pictures). It's in Chambers.
The others are difficult to hint at because they involve obscurities, I'll give the answers if you want them, Matakari.

For 18d the def is where an art gallery has hung its highest pictures, (that should give you an idea for the common word you're looking for).

Question Author
Yes, ProfessorMaisie, I would like to have the answers to the others, thank you!
And thanks for the hints, NACW!
Thanks, Matakari. I hope the hints helped, I tried to make them generous!

I'm sure you'll be happy when PM puts this one to rest for you.
10a - 'appear delirious' = RA(mb)LE [minus mb 'doctor'] and RALE is the sound of a diseased lung.
5d is a double def - 'wily old fox' (someone very cunning) is a FILE (and you can file a law suit). I see you guessed the answer anyway.

Good morning ! Many thanks, ProfessorMaisie, JJ109, NACW, for a very rewarding cerebral workout. It was a wonderful experience to discover the cleverly concocted thematic aspect of the puzzle. Hats off to Jaques! Thanks again, NACW, for what I thought was my last clue with 18d ( Found it in the BRB as you suggested!) Now, my crosser with 25a has changed and confirmation for this answer would be appreciated with parsing:

25 Echoing top note for one that reached unusual heights? ( 4 ) : ?TEN ( ETEN )

And can you explain the parsing for 28d ( Apart from the definition… ):

28 Cycling measure for compound? ( 5 ) ESTER
