In some clues, consecutive three letters have to be removed before solving.
I have about 5 clues remaining to solve but only 24 trios, instead of 36.
I can make a 9 letter name starting with A for author.
I will start with these two.

23d. They deliver suspect to attend spies (7)
30d Bosses possessing amber gems bearing figures (6)

Thanks.

23 Posties (remove 'tte')
30 Cameos, I didn't do anything about the letters, I was just about finished by then!
PS I think you'll be correct with the author...

Thanks NAC.
I now have completed grid.
But cannot parse 8d (Ebon), 23a (Pair) and 40a (Ogee).
Is the author 9, 9?
The author has three elements to the name, slightly sneaky. There's 9, then two other parts (one small). It;s a very famous author...

8 Oasis loses the middle three letters, leading to Bone, with the E , beginning to 'emerge' rising...
23 A 'pair' is a little set, fruit picked up = it sounds like.

40. Orally, shot against one's side gives OG, own goal, and pronounced Ogee, which is the curve.

Thanks NAC.
8d is a clever clue.
Was not aware of Pair's meaning here.
Have not heard OG being used here.

Now to figure out the end game.
May be back.
Glad those helped, I have heard OG/ogee from football-mad boys! The end game was neat and pleasing.
30 - Chief Executive Officers = CEOS [around] AM(ber).

Thank you NAC and ProfessorM.
Once I figured out the name in author's native language, it was easy.
The substitutions were in a pattern so did not have to look hard.

Nice puzzle.
Hankir, thanks for the update. I didn't want to give away too much earlier, fully expecting you to manage it all!
