Sounds good to me. "The chairman told the board that the company would have to fall back on its contingencies/reserves unless profits improved".
It's lousy English (in my opinion), with 'contingencies' being used (wrongly)as a synonym for 'contingency fund' but I'm confident that it provides the answer that you're seeking.
