Some answers are longer than the space provided...making clashes in the grid. Symbols then replace the clash
Other answers need altering before entry ....( i can see how these work..)

17a A lot of productive discussion curtailed revealing a gaping void (6 or more)
34a Brave US lawyer taking on syndicate (4 or more)
1d Short "e" sound initially heard in "boxes", on reflection (more than 4)

Question Author
do i use the "musical sign" there?
Not music - astronomy, saladdodger.
Question Author
rather like last week's EV then !?
Saladdodger, I think it's a little less sophisticated... my symbols are all the same.
What Astronomy word can you make out of INSEG?
Foreign language?
No, nothing Greek this time (although I can see what you're getting at, I think). This time it's the same symbol every time - and 'symbol' in the broadest sense.
No need to make anagrams, hankir - the clashing words are in order.
...try 'Segin'.
Question Author
Yes i can see the case for the same symbol each time but i can also see the case for the 1st 5 greek letters for each of the clashes? ( ie the 5 main stars in the down unclued)
Thanks ProfessorM
Yes, I thought that's what you were getting at, saladdodger - I think that's why the preamble mentions 'the same appropriate symbol'.
18a One can learn to give speech with some money being handed over (4) M?NI

I have finally reached a point where I have one answer that needs altering.

29d is a 5 letter answer, very unusual turnip.
I have ?ENA.
Drop the last letter of the answer and anagram?
29 - 'our group' (2 letters) + leading group (3 letters) - all raised (I've never heard of this veg before, hankir - but you're right about the last letter being dropped + anag.).
