Ground to a halt with one letter to find :-(

With cereal disease dry stalk leads to thin yield: b-nty

I can find three possible solutions, but none of them seem to provide the whole answer.

In order of preference:

My Chambers has bunt as a disease of wheat, but the only bunty is from the same root, which seems a cop out.

Bent is a type of wiry grass, adjective benty, which would be a thin yield.

Ben is a type of tropical tree, with t(hin) y(ield)

None of them really satisfies me, but these clues are usually watertight. Please help.

Curses. Title not included: Azed
BUN (dry stalk, see Chambers) + T(hin) Y(ield)

Ah! I was so taken by bunt that I didn't check bun. Appreciate your help, thanks.
Or maybe it's bounty minus the U (i.e. bounty thinned)
I think the other explanation bun + is right now
I didn't like the T(hin) Y(ield) before but I hadn't spotted the leads bit. TY it is
