Nothing to fear in my experience but if you intend sightseeing hire a car. Los Angeles is vast.
I've never been to LA, tamborine, but regarding the renting a car situation I would consider the stress you might be under by having to learn, very quickly, to drive on the "wrong side" of the road. Obviously, this depends upon your age...The younger you are, the easier it is to adapt. Anyway, have a good trip.

Dont they all carry guns ? Should I carry cash or use an atm? What car - as I might hit LV.
Wikitravel is packed with information:

Scroll down to 'By car', in the 'Getting Around' section, to read about the joys (or otherwise!) of driving in LA. (See the rest of that section for information about taxis and public transport).

Scroll further down to 'Stay Safe' for general safety tips:

Use the links under 'Districts' for even more information.
It's not the wild west, tamborine. I've never seen a gunslinger in Los Angeles. The major roads are busy so you need to keep your wits about you when driving and joining then can be a bit hairy due to short slip roads. Read the rules of the road before you go. Choice of car is up to you. I don't know what LV is.
Probably Las Vegas, Naomi.
Sorry I missed a bit. Carry a little cash, but as in this country cards are more convenient.
Ahhh, right. Interesting drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas across the desert, but good roads and quite easy.
What car - as I might hit LV.

Those Winnebago things are huge, tambo.
It's 270 miles from LA to LV, which is the same distance as it is from London to Durham, so that's quite a drive if you're not familiar with the roads.
It’s pretty much a straight road. There’s not much between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The coast road from Los Angeles to San Francisco is a nice drive too so you might want to consider that instead.
Depends where you are staying as to if you need a car. Hotels will get you taxis and some have chauffeur driven cars available to book. Taxis easy to get at LAX. Plan what you want to see before you go. We took public transport to Getty Museum/art gallery lovely gardens. We walked Rodeo Drive area, it was close to our hotel. There is a tour bus to “see” celebrity houses. We walked Hollywood Boulevard area. I would not advise you driving to and from airport but if you do want to hire a car ask your hotel to arrange it for you. To drive to LV what time of year are you going. It can be very hot. When we stayed in Santa Monica walking everywhere was easy.

my dter is pestering me to go with her - gawd help me. She's quite flashy but I prefer a low key car that wont attract hijackers. Am only going to see my centenary aunt but dter will want more action :(

dter got visas & insurance, maybe fly 21st Jan. Do I use same cell sim card?
Only thing I found about american cars is that power steering is very "light" hardly needing any manual input to change direction, very disconcerting at first, but you get used to it after a few miles. Some of the out of the way roads can offer spectacular views / photo opportunities.
Hire a convertible, tambo ( weather should be good ).

Fasten seat belt and enjoy the ride !

am reading your link Chris, will take all this with me to read on the long flight.....gotta wean myself off cigs first :(
>>> Do I use same cell sim card?

The USA uses different frequencies for mobile phone signals to those used in the UK. So your phone need to be a quad band one if it's to work in the States. Your UK SIM should work but, unlike in the EU (where there are no roaming charges), your service provider might charge you very high roaming charges to use your phone in the USA.
I would get PAYG card and maybe a cheap phone from airport to use in States, just take a list of phone numbers with you.
San Francisco would have been a better choice LA is a dump
