Why "wain", which I believe it to be - can't parse it.

Forget that- he was called The Duke but it was spelt Wayne

I still don't understand this clue. Where is the definition and what has Dawn French got to do with it?
The answer is "Dawn", "French" is the definition - wordplay as Woodside's post above ^^^

French is the definition, the comedienne is "DAWN" French, so Dawn is the answer.
Dawn = D(uke) + a (one) + w(ago)n (ie empty wagon)
