8 FIGURA
9 INFAUNA (...bEds)
23DUCCIO (13th)
... I can't find FIGURA in Chambers but it's definitely right and comes up on an online search.
PM, I wondered if Figura might have been the reason for the Inquisitor editor mentioning yesterday that they use OED as a 'secondary source'. I don't have a copy, so don't know if Figura is there.
I had the very same thought, Neveracrossword.
PM, thanks. I was happy with the answer anyway, the dictionary thoughts came a little later.

Thank you ProfessorMaisie.

I would have never guessed 10th becomes 13th.
I did try D?C?I? with a couple of word wizards. Did not get Duccio.
Parsing of 9a not clear. Irish lass?

Is 4d Kinging? Never heard of it. Seeming not to see can mean Kinging?

Is the last letter of vertical unclued D?

Still trying to figure out 5d, 13a, 18a and 4 characters out of 13.

Thanks.

UNA = girl
starts W not K
S not D
remove first letter from a 5 letter word 'king like' for 5
13 = musical 'noteS'
the coins are LATI reverse for 'rasta food' (again, not in Chambers).
...not sure what you mean by '4 characters out of 13' hankir.

...and just to clarify 4 does contain a K later on.
'inf' = inferior/'below' followed by A='one'
...I see now - with 'noteS', you should only be 3 short now (did you find the other number?).

Thanks ProfessorMaisie.
I was putting King at the top. That meaning of mine is new to me.
I am not sure I know what you mean by finding another number.

I now have completed grid.
I have 11 of the 13 characters.
First 6 letters mean centre?

I have yet to find the title and finish the perimeter.
That's next.

Here's the OED entry for 'figura':

Full online access to the OED (which costs megabucks for a personal annual subscription) is available to anyone who's a member of a public library service that's signed up to the system. Suffolk Libraries (where I live) don't offer OED access but I simply use my Essex Library card number instead. (The majority of public library services subscribe to the OED. Suffolk is in a minority).

So, as long as you've got a library card from a relevant library service, you can log in here for full OED access:

Thanks buenchico.
It does not help those of us who are outside UK.

I can ask my Scottish friend to send me his log in info but that may be unethical.

But you have given me an idea. I appreciate it.
I will ask our Library if they have access to online OED for members.
Thank you Buenchico.
