Not as tough as I feared at first sight. Stuck on 21 dn - I've got a word that doesn't seem to fit the definition. Can anyone provide a hint?

Maybe bookbinder was indirectly saying it's better to give enough information that those without teh crossword have a chance of helping- in this clase the clue plus also the 'definition' that was referred to in the OP (although I think we now know that was a red herring).

fiction-factory - It would have been a very long post - the preamble is very wordy and the 'clues' are in couplets. There isn't an obvious definition, and there isn't any wordplay as such, just lots of superfluous words for the rhyme and letter mixtures for the answers.

fiction-factory: you're quite correct in your assumption of what I was looking for. If the OP could give us some hint of what kind of puzzle it is, then I, for one, would be very pleased. But here, it was merely listed under Crosswords. All crosswords are the same, to me, unless they are unduly complicated. In that case, a hint from the OP would be helpful.

Agreed, Flocker14, I was a bit intimidated, but once I had a couple of answers it fell into place nicely. I also struggled with Theria and was dreading having to ask for help, but I Sherlocked it. Once I had discounted the impossible ...

Apologies for the late response. I don't start the crosswords until I've finished with everything else, and I've been in and out all day. Now I need to find something else to do until breakfast :-))
