Most of the grid filled in and I have 3 of the 4 answers without definition. I know the verse and the forth line has my 3 out of four answers in it. I've tried anagraming them, but that doesn't work & would give me 26 not 22 letters to highlight. What am I doing wrong? I'm assuming the highlighted letters are foodstuff not money? Any help with one of the highlighted words would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance

You must anagram them before looking for the other 4 things (they cross your new entries Ripper).
Look down from the second letter of 1ac.
Ripper, there's not just one anagram for each thematic entry...

I've probably got the wrong end of the stick (as usual) but one of my thematic entries is temporal and, apart from 'mole trap' I can find no other anagrams.
I'm probably being thick as usual!
ProfessorMaisie I've got the bread you suggested but I'm still stuck
Thank you both from this aged trier of crosswords!!!
Ripper, there's another one Prometal.

Thank you Neveracrossword, that will probably give me something to look at, think I'll have another look in the morning as I'm going 'boggle eyed' here.
Nearly Christmas - I hope you have a Wonderful time!
Glad I could help. The thematic entry there wasn't too hidden - check the parrot clue!

PS Season's greetings.
Ripper - the setter has been kind and placed the 4 'bones' symmetrically, so if you've got three of them you'll know where to find the other one.
Neveracrossword has provided the tricky anagram - the other three are easier but there are more options (luckily there are only real words in the final grid).
I'm sure you're very nearly there.
And Happy Christmas from me too.
Question Author
Neveracrossword, do you have an anagram book/website that I don't know about? I searched everywhere!
Question Author
I'm determined to finish this before Christmas!
Just need a 'nudge' on three clues: 36across Fiend caught scratching kid's face (5) the FI is removed I think! ?EA?E. 4 down: Even you'd get exhausted from run wearing this (4)TIE? 28 down: Recess brackets roughly modified (6) R???ST (I want it to be rabbet, but that doesn't work with my 42 across which I think is either snee or sned.)
Happy Christmas!
What a way to spend Christmas Eve!!!!
Ripper, you're right about the Fi in 36 A. 'Kid' is a verb.
4. 'Even' is the definition. Take the usual 'run' from a word meaning 'exhausted'.

42. You're right about Snee - it's more obvious if you've done the thematic stuff. I'm not sure how 28 D works, my answer is an anagram of most of the letters in 'brackets'. PS I missed your query about anagrams - I use the Chambers Word Wizard.
28d 'recess' = REST [around] CA = 'roughly'.
Thanks for that, PM (I didn't give answers as Ripper mentioned 'nudges').
I'm sure Ripper got the answer from your hint Neveracrossword - mine was just for clarification.
Thanks, PM - I didn't want to look unhelpful!

Thank you Neveracrossword, I've put recast as 28 down and cease as 36 across. But, try as I might I cannot find the bread!, forgot to say I've got 29 down as pastes. As usual I'm doing something horribly wrong!!
I think you have the balance just right - I'm working on mine!
Happy Christmas.
36ac is wrong Ripper.
