Could it be SLIPS/OFF ? I have SHEER as the answer to 32a ( Downright see-through S???R ) this makes the first letter S.

'Slips' fits 'quietly' better.

...and 'sheer' is much better than 'clear' as 'clear' doesn't take into account the word 'downright'
