...From Sir Walter Scott, it means the moon.
I think it's an anagram of 'fear at cambuslan' - 'cut'= lose the 'g'. (I don't like the 'out').

What sort of word is Buat?

Is that like...♫ When the buat comes in ♫
Tilly, 'buat' is the same as 'bowet' and 'bowat', Scots words for lantern.
