It was certainly a day when I was glad to have the crossword to do. Rain, rain, and more rain. It meant that His Nibs's game was eventually called off but only after they had gone all the way to the other school. Bit daft really, I think but I suppose it made sense to the teacher. I wasn't there as it was an away game.
Of course it meant that His Nibs was grumpy and almost made it seem as if it was my fault when he rang me. But he is taking me to a PUB to make up to me (SWMBO does not approve but she hasn't said no). Something to look forward to. Not a common occurrence for me to be taken to a pub!
Anyway to the Crossie. there are two clues where I have an answer but don't really follow the logic and I'd be grateful for guidance please.

"Pound's collapse under pressure at home". I have p*n*o*d so penfold fits and that sort of means home doesn't it? But the rest leaves me baffled

The other one is "Fugitives read aloud two letters, then others". With the letters I have "escapers" fits. I get the S K part but not the rest. Can someone help me please?

Fugitives - Escapees. SK and Pees/Ps.
Hi Steven -

7d Pinfold (pound; animal pen) - 'fold' (collapse, under) 'p(ressure) in (at home)'
32a Escapees - say "ess (s) ca (k) pees (p's)"

Enjoy the pub :-)
Pen...home
Fold...collapse

Penfold...pound

:-)
so the pinfold one is another of those (and lit?) clues where a word is used in the wordplay and in the definition. i don't like them
No.

Pound is the definition , the rest is wordplay.

Thank you all so much ! And a particular thank you to the Master, Lie-in King, for the small correction to "pinfold" I didn't realise that it was an alternative to penfold but I looked it up and I see that it IS. And, of course , it was your meaning of "pound" which makes the rest fit
Why did the "pees" part in the other clue just not register with me ? Doh!
Thanks to you all. Wish me luck this evening.
steven
Good luck Steven.
Stevenj, I'm sure you'll have no problems with your pees in future!
ff - "pound" is the definition, the rest of the clue is wordplay
Question Author
Oh and hello Mamyalynne. Thanks for your help too.
steven
Sorry, I should've refreshed the screen
Question Author
Dear Lie-in King what does the ff in your response mean, sir?
steven
fiction-factory
Ta Mamya - sorry, I was in the kitchen.
quite right too ;-)
Question Author
but that has left me just as puzzled, Mamyalynne and LiK. what does fiction factory have to do with it?
He asked a question about the clue above.
Question Author
Who did? Now SWMBO has called me for supper so I have to adjourn for a while. but I'll be back before the Big Night Out.
